CC News: Summer Schedule

Posted by: Drek on May 29, 2008
CC News We will be switching to our summer schedule for the months of June, July and August. There will only be one game night per week and that will be Fridays. There will be no first weekend of the month voting rules in place during this time.

CC News: Our Bandwidth Has Been Increased!

Posted by: Drek on May 20, 2008
CC News Our bandwidth has been increased, we now have one full megabit of upload bandwidth to work with! It doesn't seem like that long ago we were hosting an eleven player game server on 192kbps upload. Oh the memories...

This probably won't produce a huge noticeable effect on server performance, although it should make the website, and especially images on the website, load faster, and downloads should be noticeably faster as well.

Probably the biggest difference though will be for me if I need to do something else on the net while the game server is up and running. Instead of being capped at 40kpbs upload bandwidth, I'll now have a staggering 80kbps of upload bandwidth to work with! Whatever shall I do with such decadent abundance... wink

Of course that makes the situation sound worse than it really is or has been. That "cap" is a minimum, so I will always be guaranteed to have at least that much bandwidth to work with, at most times I will have access to far more bandwidth than that, even when the game server is up and running.

CC News: Psychostats 3.1 Released!

Posted by: Drek on May 06, 2008
Gaming News What I was hoping would happen, has happened. Psychostats 3.1 has been released. This version includes some great new features, including the ability to configure game events to be included in the stats, which should make it much easier for us to add support for mods that haven't been supported yet.

Another interesting new feature, which could prove to be a real hit, if I can get it to work, is something called heatmaps. Basically what this does is show you a map of the server and shows you where kills have been happening on the map. You can apparently have it show these stats overall, or for individuals.

So sometime over the next few weeks, I will be installing the new stats. The heatmaps require a special server plugin which modifies the game logs to include that information, which means that we won't start seeing those stats until we've played a few games with the new plugins.

Wish me luck, and here's hoping the stats work better for us than they have in the past.

CC News: Hardware Upgrade Looming

Posted by: Drek on Apr 18, 2008
CC News Thanks to a couple of generous donations from oldmanbob and Bombadier, I have ordered a 500GB backup drive. You may think, "That's nice, what does this mean?" Well, this means I will be able to backup absolutely everything on both my own personal pc, and the server, which has other implications.

I happen to have a much larger drive waiting to be installed on the server, but I didn't want to do it without the ability to backup absolutely everything, just to make the process of reinstalling everything easier. So what this really means is that sometime within the next few weeks I will be installing our new (old) hard drive, and reinstalling all the software on the server, which means that the server, which hosts the website, will likely be down for a few days. Which means that the website will also be down for a few days.

Hopefully, however, my experiences of the past couple of years have taught me something, and the downtime won't last more than a day or two, and maybe, if everything goes well, less than a day. But usually something goes wrong which doubles or triples the time I expect installs and reinstalls to take, so don't be surprised if the site is down for a few days, but you never know, we might get lucky...

CC News: New Version of PsychoStats to be Released.

Posted by: Drek on Apr 12, 2008
Gaming News It seems to me that our stats have never worked as I hoped they would, not really since PsychoStats version one, and even for that version many things, such as bonuses for team wins, did not work properly, but since version two the stats have been buggy to the point of being almost complete gibberish. However, a new version of PychoStats is about to be released. So if you are stats junkie as I am, sometime within the next month or two, there will be a new version of PsychoStats, and I am hopeful that finally we will have reliable stats as a result.

If the new version of PsychoStats is still useless, I am going to consider reverting to version one, but we will cross that bridge when we get to it.
